Gregory Hines

Gregory Oliver Hines was born in New York City on February 14, 1946.  He was an American singer, actor and choreographer but was especially know for his dancing.

Gregory and his brother Maurice starting dancing at a young age. He went on to be an extreme success in the entertainment industry. He has won six awards in his career including when he won a Tony Award for “Jelly’s Last Dance”. He appeared in major motion pictures, including “The Cotton Club” and in 1997 had his own show called “The Gregory Hines Show”.

Gregory was always connected to his dance roots and was a spokesperson for Tap in America. A year after the start of his show, he lobbied succesfully for a National Tap Dance Day in America which is now anually celebrated in 40 cities across America and in over 6 other nations. Mr Hines is an inspiration to tappers of different ages all over the world. He passed away August 9, 2003 of liver cancer. he is interred at St Volodymyr’s Ukrainian Catholic Cemetary in Oakville, Ontario.
